Christ stilling the waves

The Trumpeteer

AUGUST 1914, SEPTEMBER 2013, AND RASPUTIN

Rasputin

AUGUST 1914, SEPTEMBER 2013, AND RASPUTIN

There are curious similarities, and dissimilarities between the events unfolding in the Middle East, and the events leading up to the First World War. We need to be aware of the real dangers of a Third World War, something that the saintly seers do not really allude to very much. Most of the saints would indicate that there will be revolutions and civil wars breaking out everywhere. Having said that, so does the Lord, when he warns that the sign of the end will be wars and rumours of wars, among the other prophetic signs. However Christ also tells us that “when these things begin to take place, look up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21: 28). The beauty of Apocalyptic literature is that like a spiral staircase, it comes round again and again until finally one reaches the top, which of course is the Judgment and the end of time.

Resonances abound with the events leading up to the First World War. The Austrians were determined to finally humiliate and destroy Serbia after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo on 28th June 1914, and with this spark the whole of Europe was caught up in a conflagration which has only died down and has never been put out. In fact with the Second World War the firestorm of war was hotter and more global.

Politicians are sadly not historians. They too often live for power, and the moment, for applause and the indulging of vain glory, which is the glamorous side of Pride, if Pride can be glamorous, which of course it can’t, but our vision is clouded with sin, and cannot see the spiritual wood for the temporal trees. Hollande and Cameron have had excellent private educations, but whether they have any grasp of Christianity, one does not know. Cameron is a very woolly Anglican, and Hollande is a lapsed Catholic, who is one year younger than myself, and so he remembers the old Church, and the old Catechism. He has no excuse for his apostasy. Cameron has every excuse, as Anglicanism is a weather vane Church if ever there was one, and he is too young to remember anything of note. As Obama seems to be devoid of all personality, but has a certain amount of charm, it is hard to know what he believes in. He and his wife Michelle for years have attended a Church whose Black pastor would appear to be something of a rabble rouser. As Obama was a pupil of Saul Arlinsky, he along with Hilary Clinton, must be something of a Communist. However as Saul Arlinsky managed to pull the wool of Jacques Maritain’s eyes, he can perhaps be forgiven.

At the danger of applying a somewhat simplistic metaphor, In 2013 America is Germany 1914, Britain is Austria 1914, Syria is Serbia, and Russia is again Russia, but no longer with Britain. Israel was part of the Ottoman Empire in 1914, and is certainly something of a wild card in the whole wretched warmongering nonsense. America and Britain are refusing to accept Syria’s offer as being authentic, namely to let the UN weapons inspectors into the country, which is what they wanted, much as Austria refused to accept Serbia’s almost grovelling self abasement before that ageing and collapsing Empire. America too is an ageing Empire, though it does not realize it. It is also a lot less charming and engaging than Austria was then in 1914, and is now in 2013.

It would be no bad thing to quote the following passage from David Stevenson’s widely acclaimed history of the First World War, “1914 - 1918”, and interpolate a few comments.

“These details matter because in summer 1914 international tension was acute, a general war was not inevitable and if one had not broken out then it might not have done so at all. It was the Habsburg monarchy’s response to Sarajevo that caused a crisis. Initially all it seemed to do was to order an investigation. But secretly the Austrians obtained a German promise of support for drastic retaliation (here the Americans become the Austrians). On 23 July they presented an ultimatum to their neighbour, Serbia. Princip and his companions were Bosnians (and therefore Habsburg subjects), but the ultimatum alleged they had conceived their plot in Belgrade, that Serbian officers and officials supplied them with their weapons (read here Syria’s supposed chemical weapons), and that Serbian frontier authorities had helped them cross the border. It called on Serbia to denounce all separatist activities, ban publications hostile to Austria-Hungary, and co-operate with Habsburg officials in suppressing subversion and conducting a judicial inquiry. The Belgrade government’s reply, delivered within the forty-eight-hour deadline, accepted nearly every demand but consented to Austrian involvement in a judicial inquiry only if that inquiry was subject of Serbia’s constitution and to international law. (No doubt Obama and Cameron, like George Bush Jnr. and Tony Blair will not be too bothered with the niceties of international law) The Austrian leaders in Vienna seized on this pretext to break off relations immediately, and on 28th July declared war.” (pp. 10-11)

As they say “The rest is history”, but it is also not simply history, it is part of what is called Sacred History. Much of Sacred History is all about Man’s rebellion against God. Man’s mimicry of the Satanic boast “I will not serve”, runs like a thoroughly irritating leit motif through the music of history. Musically the present era is like a mixture of Stockhausen and Wagner; gigantic, massive, and ultimately not celestial. The Angels and Saints look on, and rejoice at the triumph of The Lamb, as we must follow him tracing his bloody footsteps to Golgotha, and that Via Crucis now runs through Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, and Egypt, but it will not end there. The immediate future is worrying, and possibly will be terrifying.

Now Rasputin made the prophecy that on 23rd August 2013 the World would end. Well Rasputin, spoiled mystic that he was, got that wrong, for no man knows either the day or the hour when Time will end, but he may be right in one way. The World Civilization that we know may well be reduced to ruins, and a new world will emerge. Rasputin was right about the Russian Family falling if he, Rasputin was killed by the boyars:

"I write and leave behind me this letter at St. Petersburg. I feel that I shall leave life before January 1. I wish to make known to the Russian people, to Papa, to the Russian Mother and to the Children, to the land of Russia, what they must understand. If I am killed by common assassins, and especially by my brothers the Russian peasants, you, Tsar of Russia, have nothing to fear, remain on your throne and govern, and you, Russian Tsar, will have nothing to fear for your children, they will reign for hundreds of years in Russia. But if I am murdered by boyars, nobles, and if they shed my blood, their hands will remain soiled with my blood, for twenty five years they will not wash their hands from my blood. They will leave Russia. Brothers will kill brothers, and they will kill each other and hate each other, and for twenty-five years there will be nobles in the country. Tsar of the land of Russia, if you hear the sound of the bell which will tell you that Gregory has been killed, you must know this: if it was your relations who have wrought my death then no one of your family, that is to say, none of your children or relations will remain alive for more than two years. They will be killed by the Russian people....I shall be killed. I am no longer among the living. Pray, pray, be strong, think of your blessed family.

Gregory"

(23rd of August in the Julian Calendar which Rasputin was following is 13 days behind the Gregorian Calendar which is used in the West. So on that basis catastrophe may well take place next week!)
