The Collapse of Rome
By The Hermits, Jun 13 2017 11:03AM
Everything looks pretty disastrous. Rumours, half-truths, and lies abound. We hear that Cardinal Muller was forced to sack three members of the CDF on orders from Pope Francis. We hear that Pope Francis has instigated a secret commission to possibly reverse Humanae Vitae. We are told that the C9, those Cardinals were appointed to clean up the Vatican Finances and reform the Curia, have really failed to get anything done of a really reforming nature. It seems that the Jesuits have all but drifted off into heresy, especially when the Jesuit General, Father Arturo Sosa Abascal, says that the Devil is only symbolic, not real, and when there is a storm of protest, a representative of the General rather blandly says that the General holds everything that the Catholic Church believes in. Archbishop Paglia has been trying to explain why he had the homoerotic and utterly blasphemous fresco done in his Cathedral when he was Bishop of Terni, and the excuse is so lame as to not be worth reporting. The latest rumour is that the Heralds of The Gospel are going to have an Apostolic Visitation, which does not bode well for their future. To make things even more bizarre, The Pope has very recently said that God cannot be God without Man! To cap all this lunacy with utter silliness, Pope Francis has decided that all the Cardinals resident in Rome must tell him, when they are away. He is every inch the martinet headmaster without any of the wisdom.
The rubbish that emanates from Rome now, and the disappearance of truth and plain speaking, the ambiguities, and double dealing remind me of the lines from Matilda, that great cautionary tale and poem by Hilaire Belloc.
Matilda told such Dreadful lies
It made one Gasp and stretch one’s eyes.
Matilda having called the London Fire Brigade, when of course there was no fire, to say her aunt’s house was burning down, resulted in the house being deluged with water and all Mathilda’s aunts’ paintings were all ruined. A few weeks later when Matilda’s aunt had gone to the theatre to see “The Second Mrs Tanqueray”, and left Matilda at home as a punishment for lying, the house indeed burns down. Poor Matilda screams for help, but none comes:
For every time She shouted ‘Fire!’
They only answered ‘Little Liar’
And therefore when her Aunt returned,
Matilda and the House, were Burned
In some mysterious way, I believe that is what is happening to the Church. Fr.Linus Clovis recently delivered a superb talk at The Family Life International Conference in Rome, where he quoted John Paul II’s prophecy of a time when you would have an Anti-Church and the Church. What comes vividly to my mind is the film “The Alien” where the Alien has been embedded inside the character that John Hurt plays and bursts out from his chest, thereby killing him, but now able to wreak horror everywhere. There is an alien creature within the Church, which is made up of high ranking clergy and religious, and the deplorable lay liberal Catholic intelligentsia, who pride themselves on being modern and avantgarde and worst of all friends with the World. That World which, St. John the Evangelist warns us against, is the Devil’s domain. I have that chilling vision of these clerics being like the priests that Ezekiel sees in chapter 8 of his marvellously prophetic book:
So he brought me to the porches of the court (of the Temple). Then He said to me, “Son of man, dig a hole.” So I dug, and behold, a door. He said to me. “Go in, and see the lawless deeds they are doing here.” So I went in, and behold, I saw vain abominations --- all the idols of the house of Israel were portrayed on the wall around. There were seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel, and in their midst was Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan. Each man had a censer in his hand, and the smoke of the incense rose up. Then He said to me, “Son of Man”, do you see what the elders of the house of Israel are doing, each one of them in their private bedroom? For they said, ‘The Lord does not see; the Lord has forsaken the land.’” (Ezekiel 8: 7-12)
It seems that such things are going on in the Church today, and more terrible than these. The Bishop of the Diocese of Hallam in England has been encouraging people to offer flowers and gifts when visiting pagan shrines, and kissing pagan holy books, and one wonders how this bishop, a son of St. Alphonsus Ligouri, can encourage such spiritual wrecklessness, nay devotion to Pagan gods, something utterly forbidden to the early Christians, and something in Tertullian’s mind that was beyond forgiveness? How have we ended up in this nightmare world of blasphemy and lies? The answer lies in that disastrous and ambiguous document Nostra Aetate. There is no dialogue with non-Christian religions. There is of course dialogue with Judaism as the Jews are the firstborn, the Olive tree planted by God, it is the Old Israel, and we the Church, the New Israel share the Old Testament with the Jews. Islam, as St. John Damascene said, is only a Christian heresy. So there is only room for only a very limited dialogue. It is also demonically inspired, as it is a caricature of Christianity and Judaism.
That the Modern Church has completely forgotten or chosen to ignore all those great saints and Popes who warned against the evils of Islam is truly staggering, but Moslems, like the Anglo-Saxons in 5th century Britain, will soon take over Europe, as the Anglo-Saxons took over England. If the true Faith, so long derided or compromised by leading Church leaders, does not revive then our religious leaders will see much of the Church destroyed and countless souls lost and it will be their doing. They, like the people of Jerusalem seen in Ezekiel’s vision, will be cut down by the Man “clothed with a full length robe, with a belt of sapphire about his waist” (Ezekiel 9: 2) who is ordered by God, to go through the city and mark the just with the mark of the Tau, while the others, not marked with the Tau, are handed over to destruction at the hands of his companions. Pope Innocent III, in his opening sermon at the Fourth Lateran Council saw himself as the man in white, but the Orthodox Study Bible rightly sees the Man in White as prefiguring Christ.
The Church, the New Jerusalem, will be handed over to be punished with fire and sword. Her leaders at present are betraying Christ, with regard to his teaching on marriage, morals, the Devil, Hell and Heaven. The men who surround the Pope, and who advise him, and flatter him, remind me of the appalling associates of Joseph Stalin, so brilliantly portrayed in Simon Sebag-Montefiore’s magnificent book “At the Court of the Red Tsar”. Those who have said they would correct the Pope have, seemingly failed to do so. They do not have to do anything particularly remarkable, they simply have to present the Pope with the words of Christ, and the Sixth Commandment, “Thou shalt not commit adultery”. Nothing could be simpler. Christ talked of Hell and the Devil many times. Either one believes in the Bible or one does not. You cannot have it both ways as the present status quo would have it.
Soon we will see terrors and chaos beyond our wildest imaginings. We will see the seeming destruction of the Church. We must be brave, and be filled with hope. Walking in the steps of the great martyrs, and confessors of the Early Church we must, with palms in our hands, go through the fires of persecution for the sake of truth and, with love high in our hearts, we must welcome the Cross even to martyrdom. Christ did not call us to comfort and an easy life. Why? Because He did not have a comfortable and easy life himself, and why should we? If we claim to be his followers, then we should be like his disciples, and the Apostles sharing in Christ’s life. Are we so blind as to not see the joy and the romance of the truly Christian life? Do we not see that it requires everything? We may not be called to be like St. Paul, St. Athanasius, St. Catherine of Siena, St.Vincent Ferrer, The English and Welsh Martyrs, but we are called to great holiness by being obedient to the Gospel, and to be true friends of Christ suffering all that he suffered in his life. If we want to know how to behave then all we have to do is to live the life proposed by Christ to us in the Sermon on the Mount, whose two wings are the Ten Commandments, and the great parable of the Last Judgement. It is as simple as that.
However, we will look upon a Rome burning once again, and a Church apparently destroyed by those within, and by enemies without, but we must not fear because the Church is not the Pope’s, nor does it belong to Cardinals, Bishops, and priests, neither is it the domain of religious, and it does not belong to this shibboleth, “The People”, a notion that always sounds redolent of a Marxist viewpoint. The Church belongs to Christ. She is his bride, who at present looks like a Harlot, but Christ will clothe her again in his righteousness, his beauty, his glory, and his holiness. We should not be afraid, and how could we? For he so often sends his own Mother, Our Lady of Victories, to console us, and encourage us, and lead us in the great army that will, along with the great Heavenly Host, finally defeat Satan, his cohorts of devils, and all those who rebel against Christ and who will not serve him, and refuse to love him.
It is as simple as that. The West is passing away, and what will take its place we do not know. All we do know is that the World will be visited with such disasters that it will look a very different place, as different as the world looked before and after the Flood. We must not fear, but simply cast ourselves upon the Divine Mercy and trust with all our might and main.
Christ has won the victory, but we must do our part. We are not asked to be passive, but throw ourselves into the fray with all the ardour of love as true Crusaders of Christ determined his Honour, his Truth, and this Law.
